Is X down? Users report widespread issues as platform returns after major outage

Although X has largely recovered, a number of users are still reporting persistent page loading problems.

Across the globe, X (formerly Twitter) users have been experiencing a significant outage since yesterday. While there was a huge spike in outage reports in the early morning, recent data suggests that users are now gradually regaining access to their accounts and resuming their social media activity. Major internet trackers Downdetector are also confirming that thousands of users initially reported experiencing problems.

This marks the second service disruption for X users within the past week. It's crucial to understand that this isn't a country-level restriction or a localized internet disruption; leading internet monitoring service NetBlocks has confirmed it as a major worldwide outage. Users have reported various issues, including posts not loading and difficulties logging in or regaining account access. Although X has not yet issued an official statement regarding the outage, the dramatic drop in outage reports—from thousands to hundreds—strongly indicates that the core issue is being addressed.

We are among the hundreds still experiencing the effects of the X outage, facing problems with posts not loading successfully and notifications remaining un-updated for almost a day. This suggests that X has not yet fully recovered from the disruption and is still working through persistent issues. Wired magazine has reported that the primary cause behind this outage was a fire that broke out at an X-owned data center in Oregon on Thursday. This incident created an emergency situation, with batteries also being involved in the affected server rooms.

We've witnessed major X outages in the recent past; just a few months ago in March, users suffered for more than a day. At that time, Elon Musk, CEO of X, claimed a hacker group attempted to overwhelm the servers with bot traffic, leading to the service disruption. However, X has not yet offered a detailed explanation for the current incident.
