The wait is finally over! Microsoft is now testing a native video wallpaper feature for Windows 11. This exciting new functionality was recently spotted by an X user who is an active member of the Windows 11 Insider program. This much-anticipated feature is currently in the testing phase and available in the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview build.
For years, Windows users have been eagerly waiting for this capability. In the absence of official support for a video background, many turned to third-party applications to achieve the effect. While Microsoft previously offered a similar feature called DreamScene in Windows Vista, it was later removed in Windows 7.

Now, X user phantomofearth has provided a glimpse of this new feature, which allows you to set a video file as your desktop background. It was spotted in the latest Windows 11 Dev/Beta Build (26x20.6690). This new video wallpaper feature supports various file formats, including MP4, MKV, AVI, and GIF, in addition to standard image formats.
How to Enable Video Wallpapers in Windows 11
This new functionality is currently available under the Windows 11 Dev Builds (26x20.6690). To enable the feature, you simply need to activate Feature ID 57645315 and then restart explorer.exe.
It's important to note that this new video wallpaper support is currently exclusive to the desktop; the lock screen continues to support images only. The ability to use video as a desktop background has always been a highly requested and popular feature among Windows users, which is why various third-party wallpaper apps have become so famous on the Microsoft Store.
