Meta’s Threads is now moving toward a more dedicated and sophisticated social media platform by introducing a new Community feature. The Threads app has officially unveiled this Threads Communities feature, much like those seen on Reddit, to give users a dedicated space to delve into their interest-based topics without the usual noise of a general feed.
The emerging social media platform, Threads by Instagram, officially announced this new group-like feature—dubbed Threads Communities—earlier this Thursday, allowing you to easily delve into your interested topics. The core idea is to provide Threads users with a clean, sophisticated discussion platform, where all posts strictly regard the topics they are interested in. As Meta officially explained the idea in an announcement blog:
"With communities, it’s now even easier to find and connect with your people—and stay up-to-date on conversations you care about."
With the help of this new feature, you are able to explore different communities already available, encompassing surrounding things like professional basketball, K-Pop, books, TV shows, AI, and more.
The Reddit-Like Features and Key Differences in Community Creation
The concept of a communities feature is not entirely new; Meta’s Threads rivals, like X and Reddit, have offered similar functionality for many years. The new Threads Communities feature is like Reddit-like communities, but there is a crucial difference: in Threads, users are not yet able to make their own community. You are only able to participate in the existing interest-based communities that were made by the platform.
On the other side, Reddit gives users access to become an admin of their own communities, allowing anyone to share their thoughts. Similarly, on X, users also have the space to speak about ongoing discussion on a topic, where non-members can still see the content. This distinction in community creation is a major point of topical discussion among users right now.
Membership, Discovery, and Enhanced Engagement Tools
When you join any community you want to, Threads automatically assigns a label to your profile. This label is shown to other users, confirming you are part of the respective online community platform. The company clearly attributed this: "Your membership in communities is public." Additionally, posts from your joined communities are automatically pinned to your feed menu, ensuring you don't miss key focused discussions.
To easily discover communities:
- Search directly from your feed using the community’s name.
- Click on the three-dots community tag icon.

Looking Ahead: Future Enhancements and Ranking Considerations
This new Threads community feature is available on mobile apps and the web across the world. The social media platform also has a plan to introduce more community-focused features in the future, including a special badge to recognize "standout community contributors."
Threads also acknowledged that content ranking is somewhat affected when community posts are shown on certain bases, and of course, in the "For You" Feed. They are currently working on the "ranking within communities and the For You feed." This focus on ranking signals Meta's commitment to prioritizing the most relevant and high-quality content within these new spaces.
