Microsoft has officially pushed Windows 11 version 25H2 to the Release Preview Channel, signaling that its next major update is just around the corner. While these version upgrades have traditionally brought significant overhauls, the company seems to be adopting a different strategy this time. The upcoming update will not be a feature-packed release. Instead, it’s being delivered as a streamlined “enablement package.”
Understanding the 'No-New-Features' Label
So, is the "no-new-features" label really accurate? The short answer is yes, for the most part. Microsoft has officially confirmed that the new Windows 11 25H2 will not include any new features that aren't already present in the existing Windows 11 24H2. This means the rumors are true: the upcoming 25H2 update will focus on streamlined upgrades, enhanced stability, improved performance, and a renewed emphasis on security for both consumers and enterprises.
To achieve this, Microsoft has officially stated that "Windows 11, version 25H2 will be delivered as an enablement package (eKB)." The official blog post also clarifies that both versions of Windows 11 share the same servicing branch. This approach ensures feature parity, meaning any new features introduced are already available in the 24H2 version, eliminating the need for a major, disruptive feature drop in the 25H2 release.
Features Removed and Enterprise-Level Changes
While the primary goal of this update isn't to add new features, Microsoft has confirmed that it will remove certain features from 25H2 that were present in the 24H2 version. Although the removal of these features will not affect the general consumer, it may impact developers and enterprise users. These features include PowerShell 2.0 and the Windows Management Instrumentation command-line (WMIC).
The official blog post also states that "Windows 11, version 25H2 includes the ability for IT admins to remove select pre-installed Microsoft Store apps via Group Policy/MDM CSP on Enterprise/EDU devices." This change provides more control for IT professionals to manage device environments, a key focus of this particular release.
The Real Focus: Security, Stability, and Speed
If new features aren't the central theme, what is? The 25H2 update is primarily about three crucial things:
- Seamless Upgrades: Since it's an enablement package, the update is incredibly small and fast to install. Users upgrading from 24H2 will experience minimal downtime, often requiring just a single restart. This is a welcome change that reduces the hassle of a traditional operating system upgrade.
- Stability and Performance: This release is heavily focused on under-the-hood stability. Microsoft has likely used this update to introduce critical bug fixes and performance enhancements that will make the overall Windows 11 experience smoother and more reliable.
- Security and Enterprise Focus: For commercial and enterprise users, 25H2 brings important security enhancements. The removal of outdated tools like PowerShell 2.0 further strengthens the OS's security posture.
Should you install the 25H2 Release Preview?

For most users already on Windows 11 24H2, there is no urgent need to rush to the Release Preview Channel. You will eventually receive all the same updates and improvements through regular monthly updates.
However, if you are a power user or a developer, joining the Release Preview Channel allows you to get an early look at the stability of the final build. To get the update, you must first enroll your device in the Windows Insider Program. Once enrolled, navigate to Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. The Windows 11, version 25H2(Build 26200.5074) update will then appear as an optional download. The streamlined upgrade process means there is minimal risk of a major system crash, making it a relatively safe experience for those who like to stay on the cutting edge.
