After months of hushed rumors and eager anticipation, Samsung has finally introduced a slimmer version of their flagship Galaxy S25 family, and it's officially their thinnest smartphone ever produced. The new Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge boasts an incredibly slender profile of just 5.8 millimeters and will be available starting May 30th, with pre-orders commencing today for $1,099.

Today, Samsung unveiled the remarkably thin Galaxy S25 Edge – a device that feels unbelievably light and sleek compared to their other Samsung mobiles. This marks a significant development from an aesthetic standpoint. For years, we've witnessed a trend towards more substantial smartphones, but now Samsung is confidently claiming the "world's first" truly thin smartphone title, a long-held ambition for the company. As many anticipated, the newly unveiled S25 heavily emphasizes Samsung's dedication to elegant design and exceptional thinness. This translates to a mere 5.8mm, a notable reduction in thickness compared to the 6.4mm of its sibling, the standard Galaxy S25.

Immersive Display and Promising Durability of the New S25 Edge

Samsung highlights the promising durability of the ultra-slim Galaxy S25 Edge. Iamge: Samsung

The Galaxy S25 Edge features a captivating 6.7-inch display with a vibrant Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel and a sharp resolution of up to 3120 x 1440 (Quad HD+), mirroring the impressive visuals of the Galaxy S25 Plus. Ensuring smooth scrolling and responsiveness, the S25 Edge comes with a 120Hz refresh rate. Samsung assures users that this pursuit of thinness hasn’t compromised the phone's durability. Before its launch, the South Korean giant promised the integration of the newest and strongest Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 for the screen. While the front appears well-protected, the titanium back will need to undergo real-world testing to truly prove its resilience.

Uncompromising Power: Performance of the Galaxy S25 Edge

On the processor front, Samsung hasn't compromised, including a complete powerhouse at the core of the Galaxy S25 Edge. The newly introduced Snapdragon 8 Gen Elite, the same high-performance chip found in the wider Galaxy S25 series, also powers this slim device. This means performance won't be a headache for even the most demanding users, including gamers. The new slim mobile is also backed by 12 GB of RAM and storage options ranging from 256 GB to 512 GB. Performance-wise, this aligns perfectly with its siblings in the Galaxy S25 series, which are already considered some of the best smartphones in the world, so expect nothing less here.

Camera Innovations and Trade-offs in the S25 Edge

There's a mix of good and potentially disappointing news regarding the camera. The Galaxy S25 Edge features a dual rear camera system, vertically aligned in what I find to be a pleasing and aesthetic floating style. The good news includes a high-resolution 200MP main camera, offering 2x optical quality zoom (enabled by the Adaptive Pixel sensor) and up to 10x digital zoom – the same impressive setup found in its siblings. It also includes a 12 MP ultrawide camera sensor, which is typically excellent for autofocus and macro photography, areas where Samsung consistently excels. Now, for the potential bad news for fans of Samsung's unique and impressive telephoto lens: there is no dedicated telephoto lens. This means we'll completely miss out on the 100x Space Zoom capabilities. It seems the thinness of the S25 Edge came at the cost of including a telephoto lens.

The Galaxy S25 Edge does support 8K video recording, and Samsung has also highlighted "Nightography" enhancements aimed at capturing clearer objects in low-light conditions, especially at night. While achieving truly sharp night photos has been a long-standing challenge, recent years have shown significant improvements, and there's still room for more. It will be interesting to see what advancements Samsung has implemented in the new Galaxy S25 Edge.

The Trade-off for Thinness: Battery Capacity

As is often the case, achieving such a thin profile in the Galaxy S25 Edge comes with certain compromises. The most significant of these is the reduction in battery capacity. The slim S25 Edge packs a 3900mAh battery – a potential disappointment for those who, like me, prefer larger batteries for extended use. However, this was likely a known trade-off before launch, as the non-removable Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) battery technology, while reliable, occupies more space. Perhaps the use of silicon battery technology in future slim phones could offer increased capacity.

Software and AI Integration

From the software perspective, the Galaxy S25 Edge will likely mirror the rest of the Galaxy S25 series, featuring One UI 7 based on Android 15 and a suite of Galaxy AI features, including Now and Nav brief bar, Gemini integration with apps, and an AI assistant offering a personalized experience. There's also a powerful editing feature for noise reduction in videos, effectively minimizing wind, chatter, waves, and other distracting sounds. So, in terms of software processing and AI capabilities, expect a similar performance to the other S25 models.

Colors, Availability, and Pre-order Information

The new Galaxy S25 Edge will be available in three stylish colors: Titanium Jet Black, Titanium Icy Blue, and Titanium Silver. As mentioned earlier, pre-orders for this new slim mobile begin today, and it will be widely available for purchase starting May 30th. You can easily buy the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge from Samsung's official outlets or other platforms like Amazon at a price of $1099.
