Official: WhatsApp Introduces Ads in Status & Channels – Your Privacy Impacted?
WhatsApp Status will now display ads, marked "Sponsored," below the company name.
After considerable anticipation, WhatsApp is officially rolling out its new advertising feature globally, starting today. The messaging giant is now enabling businesses to display advertisements directly within the platform, a significant step in its monetization strategy. This new functionality is accessible to users worldwide from this very moment.
Today, Meta, WhatsApp's parent company, detailed this new ad feature through an official announcement on their blog. These advertisements will primarily appear within the "Updates" tab, offering businesses a fresh avenue to connect with their audience.
Where Will You See WhatsApp Ads?

Specifically, these WhatsApp ads will be displayed in the "Status" section, much like how sponsored content appears on Instagram Stories. Users will clearly see an indicator, such as "Sponsored," just below the name of the WhatsApp contact whose status they are viewing. These ads will remain visible to mutual contacts for 24 hours, mirroring the standard duration for regular status updates. While this feature has been part of WhatsApp's long-term plans, its implementation officially begins today, marking a new era for the platform. This new capability essentially provides an innovative way for users to engage with products and services; by clicking on a sponsored status, you can directly initiate a conversation about the promoted product or service.
How WhatsApp Ads Are Tailored (And What Information They Use)
In the familiar scenario of personalized advertising, where promotions are tailored to your interactions and preferences, WhatsApp has also provided clarity. The company states that it will use "limited info" – specifically, your country or city, language, channels you follow, and your interaction with the ads themselves. Reinforcing its long-standing commitment, WhatsApp reiterated its "end-to-end encrypted" slogan for personal communications. The company further explained that if you link your WhatsApp account to the Accounts Center, your ad experience may also be customized based on your activity across other Meta platforms.
Will Ads Affect Your Personal Chats or Privacy?
Naturally, a primary concern for many users is whether their personal chats will be affected by this change. WhatsApp has explicitly reassured users that these advertisements will have no impact whatsoever on their private conversations. Crucially, your chat data will not be shared or utilized for advertising purposes. The company firmly states: "Your personal messages, calls, and groups you are in will not be used to determine the ads you may see." This ensures that the core of your private communications remains untouched.
Beyond Ads: New Channel Features – Subscriptions & Promotions
Beyond the introduction of advertisements, WhatsApp is also rolling out two additional features: Channel Subscriptions and Promoted Channels. Channel subscriptions will function similarly to other platforms, allowing users to "receive exclusive updates for a monthly fee" by subscribing to specific channels. The second feature, Promoted Channels, will appear under the "Explore" button. This allows the company to promote channels when administrators choose to boost their visibility. While it's implied that there might be associated charges for promoting channels, the company has not explicitly detailed the fee structure at this time.
