For gamers who've been following the developments in the PC gaming space, there's a significant update on the horizon. Microsoft is finally making it possible for the Xbox app to support local game downloads on Windows on Arm devices, moving beyond the current reliance on cloud gaming. This long-awaited functionality is now in its testing phase and is available exclusively for Windows Insiders.
The Shift from Cloud Gaming to Local Downloads
Until now, playing Xbox games on an Arm-based Windows PC meant relying on a stable internet connection for Xbox Cloud Gaming. This new feature from Microsoft, currently in its testing stage, is a game-changer for owners of devices powered by Arm-based processors, such as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon series. It will allow you to download your favorite games directly onto your computer, enabling a smoother, more responsive gaming experience with lower latency, even when you're offline.
This isn't just about a new feature; it's a major step toward full compatibility and performance for gaming on Windows on Arm. As an official Xbox blog post states: "Windows and Xbox are working closely together to ensure compatibility across the catalog, and we're developing new features that will enable more games to be played on Arm®-based Windows 11 PCs in the coming months."
How to Join the PC Gaming Preview and Test the New Feature
The ability to download games locally is currently part of the Xbox app version 2508.1001.27.0 and higher. If you're eager to try out this new functionality, you'll need to be a part of the Windows Insider Program and the Xbox Insider Program.
Here’s a quick guide on how to get started:
- First, download the Xbox Insider Hub from the Microsoft Store.
- Launch the app and sign in with the same Microsoft account you use for gaming.
- Navigate to "Previews," find the "PC Gaming" option, and click "Join."
- After joining, head back to the Microsoft Store and check for updates. You should see a new version of the Xbox app available for download.
Once updated, you’ll be able to download and play compatible titles from the Xbox app catalog, including those available through your PC Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions.
Recent Updates Show Promising Progress for Xbox Gaming
This update follows a series of recent improvements by the Xbox team, including handy features like game pinning and enhanced user control. The introduction of an age verification system for users in the UK also highlights Microsoft's commitment to creating a more secure and user-friendly platform. These upgrades collectively point to a strong and continuous effort to improve the Xbox experience, meeting the demands of modern gamers.
