Are you unable to use your USB mouse and keyboard during recovery or when you want to reset your Windows 11 PC? Don’t worry. Microsoft, the parent company of Windows, has now officially announced a new emergency update, KB5070773, which will fix this issue for the recently announced Windows 11 25H2 (and 24H2).
Microsoft Rushes Out KB5070773: The Emergency OOB Fix
On Monday, Microsoft rolled out a new emergency out-of-band (OOB) fix for Windows 11. This update solves the critical problem of WinRE USB devices not working within the Windows Recovery Environment.
The issue started after the recent October 14 update (KB5066835), which accidentally broke the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Since having no functionality in WinRE is a very serious problem, Microsoft treated the update as an urgent matter. The company usually does not bring out-of-band fix updates for Windows unless there is a high-risk issue. Therefore, Microsoft found it urgent and rolled out this fix in less than a week. This new patch restores the USB mouse and keyboard functionality that was not working.
What About Other Recent Updates? (SSU & AI)
It's important to clarify what this emergency fix contains. The emergency update (KB5070773) is highly targeted to only fix the WinRE USB problem.
The other updates you may have seen—such as updates to AI components and the Windows Servicing Stack Update (KB5067360), which is version 26100.6893—were part of the previous October 14 update (KB5066835).
As Microsoft notes, that servicing stack update "makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates." This emergency fix (KB5070773) is essential to install on top of those previous updates to make your system stable and your recovery environment functional again.
